(Washington, DC) – On Wednesday, October 27, at 11 am, as part of Back to Basics Week, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a collaboration between the Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs and the Department of Energy and Environment to promote and encourage enrollment for the Solar for All and Solar Works DC programs in the Latino community.

Patricio Alvarez, PV Design Engineering Manager with New Columbia Solar, shared his story – thanking Mayor Bowser, the DC Department of Energy & Environment, and city at-large for the opportunities that helped to blaze his incredible career path. After moving to the US, and not knowing English, Patricio enrolled in the Solar Works DC program.

“I was born in Ecuador and in 2016 moved to Washington, DC where my wife was working,” Patricio recounted. “Here is where my new adventure started. I was scared. Everything was new for me, trying to learn a new culture, new people, and new language (by the way back then I didn’t speak English). Fortunately the Solar Works DC program started shortly after I moved here, and I decided to apply. What makes this program so great is the opportunity to really learn the fundamentals of the industry.”

After three months of training, our company New Columbia Solar recruited him. He quickly worked his way up from an entry level installer position to leading our team of design engineers. He said, “I would like to thank NCS because they supported my career by providing the resources and mentorship to help me advance in the industry. I’m proud to say that we’re the largest commercial solar developer in the District and we are really making a difference by building solar installations across the city and changing the way that DC is getting its energy.”

Patricio thanked Mayor Bowser, her staff, and the City of DC for creating amazing opportunities, such as Solar Works DC Program, which can have a real impact on people’s lives – and the Latino community in the District. He encouraged community members to learn more about the program to start their clean energy careers.
